What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Even the city of Las Vegas is shying away from this devil-may-care slogan, going instead with the more tempered "What happens here, only happens here." While the former slogan might have scared away those wanting to vacation with their kiddos, I can assure you that the Las Vegas area has much to offer, and you don't have to go to the Strip to find it.
My husband was born and raised in the area. He feels the need often to head south of our PNW home to "dry out." I don't mind a little sun and warmer temps myself, so we visit the area frequently.
Here are some places we love to take our family and friends of all ages.
Here you will find other-worldly red-rock formations, wildlife, and Native American hieroglyphics. The trails are mostly easy to moderate. There is a LOT of sand, so wear shoes you can get dirty. I do not recommend sandals! Entrance fee is $10 per vehicle for non-Nevada residents.
Here you will find more extensive hiking opportunities. There is a $20 entrance fee per vehicle. See the amazing video below. Then check the website to find your best options for getting out there.
If you can splurge for the Golden Knights, and you are in town for hockey season, then definitely go for it. But if that's a little much, then check out this American Hockey League affiliate of the Golden Knights. The friendly atmosphere and fun games and antics will have you smiling. Check the website for games and ticket prices.
Depending on the time of year, visit the Las Vegas Ballpark in Summerlin for a Christmas show of lights or a baseball game with the Aviators, a minor league team affiliated with the Oakland Athletics. There is even a swimming pool within the ballpark!
Of course, the Strip holds quite a few amazing places of its own, so we don't completely avoid it. You should check out the Sphere, the fountains at the Bellagio, shop at the Fashion Show Mall, catch a show, or visit one of the amazing restaurants (we just tried Gordan Ramsay's Pub and Grill and the sausage in a blanket -- yum!). On my bucket list is to Kayak to Emerald Cave.
Feel free to comment if you have a family-friendly Vegas destination to add to the list. There's more to Las Vegas than you might think.
